Why View DICOM Files Online?

After a medical imaging procedure, you may receive your results as DICOM files on a CD or through a patient portal download. These files contain your actual scan images — CT slices, MRI sequences, or X-ray captures — but they are stored in a format that requires specialized medical viewing software. Rather than searching for, downloading, and configuring DICOM viewing applications, you can view your images online in seconds.

Online DICOM viewing is particularly useful when you need quick access to imaging data outside a clinical environment. Whether you are at home reviewing your scan results before a follow-up appointment, at a different hospital seeking a second opinion, or traveling and need to share imaging data with a new physician, browser-based viewing provides instant access without software dependencies.

Our viewer applies appropriate DICOM window/level presets based on the imaging modality recorded in the file metadata. This means CT bone windows, soft tissue MRI sequences, and chest X-ray settings are automatically optimized for the type of scan you are viewing — producing clinically appropriate image display without manual adjustment.

How to View DICOM Online

  1. Upload your .dcm file from a hospital CD, patient portal, or cloud storage.
  2. The viewer reads DICOM metadata and renders with optimal display settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I view my hospital CD images without the included viewer?

Yes. Hospital CDs often include a DICOM viewer application, but these programs frequently do not work on modern computers. Upload the .dcm files directly from the CD to our online viewer and you can see your images immediately without relying on the included software.

What window/level settings are applied?

Our viewer reads the Window Center (0028,1050) and Window Width (0028,1051) values stored in the DICOM header to display the image with the same brightness and contrast settings intended by the imaging technologist. If these values are not present, default settings appropriate for the modality are applied.

Can I view multiple DICOM files from a scan series?

Yes. Upload multiple .dcm files and each will be rendered individually. For complete CT or MRI series with many slices, each file produces a separate viewable image that you can scroll through and download.
