ODS to XLSX: what changes and what doesn't
ODS is the OpenDocument spreadsheet format that LibreOffice Calc and Apache OpenOffice Calc save by default. Desktop Excel has been able to open .ods files since Excel 2007 SP2, but plenty of places still refuse them: accounting and payroll upload forms, HR and e-commerce import templates, older in-house tools, and anything that checks the file extension before it looks inside. That is usually why people need the same numbers in .xlsx rather than a different spreadsheet program.
MiConvert does the rewrite on our servers, not in your browser. Your .ods goes to a worker that runs LibreOffice 7.4 in headless mode and exports it with the Calc Office Open XML filter, the same engine and filter you would get from the command line locally. Nothing is retyped or screenshotted: cells, sheets and formula strings are translated into the OOXML structures Excel reads.
In our test files the things that matter most for a working spreadsheet survive. Formulas stay formulas and keep recalculating in Excel (a cell holding B2+B3 arrives as B2+B3, not as a frozen number). Multiple sheets keep their names and order, and a sheet that was hidden in Calc is still hidden in the converted workbook. Plain values and text come across as cells, not pictures of cells; formatting and number formats are not something we have verified for this pair, so check them once in Excel.
Treat as approximate anything where the two formats do not line up one to one. Functions that exist only in Calc, or formulas that lean on ODF-specific reference syntax, can land in Excel as an error or need a manual edit. Charts, pivot tables, conditional formatting rules, form controls and Basic macros are not something we have verified for this pair, so open the result once and look at those objects before you send it on. Password-protected ODF files are not opened at all: they are detected and reported so you can save an unprotected copy.
Converting an .ods file step by step
- In Calc, save the latest version of the sheet and make sure it is not password-protected (File, Save As, with the password box unchecked). Encrypted ODF files are rejected with a message rather than converted.
- Drop the .ods file onto this page. One file can be up to 50 MB without an account, 100 MB with a free account, and more on paid plans.
- Leave the target set to XLSX and start the conversion. The file is uploaded over HTTPS and converted by a worker on our server.
- Small sheets usually finish in a second or two; a large or formula-heavy workbook can take up to around half a minute when the queue is busy. The page updates on its own.
- Download the .xlsx file. The download link stays valid for about 4 hours.
- Open it in Excel, Google Sheets or WPS and spot-check one formula cell per sheet, plus any chart or pivot table.

Will my formulas still work in Excel?
Ordinary formulas are written into the .xlsx as formulas and recalculate when Excel opens the file; in our test a cell holding B2+B3 came through as the formula B2+B3, not as a frozen number. Functions that only exist in LibreOffice Calc, or that Excel names differently, can show an error in the converted cell and need one manual edit. Check one formula per sheet after opening.
Do charts, pivot tables and macros survive?
We have verified cell data, formulas, sheet names and hidden-sheet state for this pair, not chart or pivot objects, and not Basic macros. Treat them as needing a look: if a chart or pivot table does not come through the way you want, rebuild it in Excel from the converted data, which is now in a format Excel can chart natively.
The conversion failed with "output file not found. Expected .xlsx". What now?
That message means LibreOffice loaded or wrote nothing usable for the file. Two things fix it most often: open the file in Calc and re-save it as a fresh .ods, and confirm the file really is an OpenDocument spreadsheet rather than something renamed to .ods. If it was a one-off under load, simply converting again is worth a try.
Can I batch convert a folder of ODS files?
You can send several files in one request - 10 at a time as a guest or with a free account, 25 on Plus and 50 on Pro - and each comes back as its own .xlsx. There is no ZIP-all button, so you download them one by one. For a whole folder on your own machine, LibreOffice's command line (soffice --headless --convert-to xlsx *.ods) is the better tool.
Is there an offline way to do the same thing?
Yes, and it uses the same engine we do: install LibreOffice and run soffice --headless --convert-to xlsx yourfile.ods, or open the .ods in Calc and use Save As with the Excel 2007-365 (.xlsx) filter. Desktop Excel can open .ods directly too. This page is for machines where installing software is not an option.
Can you convert to old .xls, or go the other way?
This page writes .xlsx only. For Excel 97-2003 .xls, convert to .xlsx here and then use Save As in Excel. From an ODS file we can also produce CSV (first sheet only) and PDF, and we convert XLSX back to ODS on its own page (for an old .xls, convert it to .xlsx here first).
Are .ots templates or old .sxc files accepted?
No. Only the .ods extension is accepted for this conversion; template and legacy StarCalc files are refused at upload with an unsupported-format message. Open them in LibreOffice Calc and save a plain .ods copy first.
What happens to my spreadsheet after the conversion?
Conversion runs on our servers, so the file is uploaded. The uploaded .ods is deleted as soon as the job finishes, and the converted .xlsx plus its download link are removed automatically about 4 hours later. The link is a long random token that is not listed anywhere, though it is not single-use, so avoid forwarding it. File names, sizes and outcomes are recorded in our logs, and signed-in accounts keep a conversion history row.
