CAD & Engineering Formats
STEP and IGES carry exact B-rep surfaces and curves rather than triangle approximations, as do FreeCAD FCStd documents, Rhino 3DM and raw BREP exports. CSG comes from OpenSCAD's programmatic solid modelling and IFC is the Industry Foundation Classes standard for building models. DXF is most often a 2D drawing format, so a 3D conversion only applies when the file actually contains solids or meshes.

Point Cloud & LiDAR Formats
E57 is the ASTM standard for laser-scanning exchange, LAS is the ASPRS LiDAR format and LAZ its losslessly compressed form, PCD is the Point Cloud Library's native format, and PTS and XYZ are plain-text point lists. These files record measured points rather than surfaces, so a mesh has to be reconstructed from the samples.

Polygon Mesh & Interchange Formats
OBJ, STL, PLY, DAE, FBX, glTF, GLB and 3DS all describe polygon meshes, differing in whether they also carry materials, UVs, rigs or animation. OFF and SMF are minimal geometry-only formats from academic geometry processing, and VRML (file extension .wrl) is the legacy Virtual Reality Modeling Language. Feature support is uneven, so a conversion keeps only what the target format can represent.

3D Printing & Toolpath Formats
3MF and AMF are XML-based additive-manufacturing formats that record units, materials and colour alongside the mesh, which plain triangle formats do not. G-code and NC files hold machine instructions — the toolpath a printer or CNC actually executes — rather than a model, so any geometry has to be derived from the paths.
USD & AR Scene Formats
USD is Pixar's Universal Scene Description: .usda is the human-readable text form, .usdc the binary form, .usd can be either, and .usdz is a zipped package used for AR delivery on Apple devices. Beyond geometry these files describe scene composition — layers, references and hierarchy.
Animation & DCC Scene Formats
BLEND is Blender's native application file rather than an interchange format, Alembic stores baked geometry and simulation caches for handoff between VFX tools, and BVH holds a skeleton hierarchy with motion data and no mesh at all. Alembic and BVH are sampled over time, so a static target format represents a single frame.

Zipped Model Bundles
3D models are often distributed as ZIP archives because formats such as OBJ, text-based glTF and DAE reference separate material, texture or .bin files that have to travel with the model. The ZIP is only a container — the model format stored inside it is what holds the geometry.
3D Model Utilities
Operations that change a model in place rather than converting between formats — mesh compression, texture extraction and voxelisation.
About 3D Model Converters
Upload a 3D model above and choose the format you need for the web, AR, 3D printing, or CAD. Turn OBJ or FBX into compact GLB/GLTF for real-time viewers, export STL for your 3D printer, or convert STEP and IGES from CAD software — no heavy applications required. Conversions preserve geometry and run without a sign-up. Whether you're building a web experience, prepping a print, or moving between tools, every converter below is free, secure, and works on any device. Files are processed privately and removed automatically after conversion.
Game and web developers use GLB/GLTF as the standard for real-time 3D viewers and AR because it bundles geometry, materials, and textures into one compact file. Makers exporting to a 3D printer need STL or 3MF, while engineers moving between CAD packages rely on neutral formats like STEP and IGES to preserve precise geometry across different software. MiConvert bridges these workflows — for example turning a Blender OBJ export into GLB for a website, or a SketchUp model into STL for printing — without needing the original modeling application installed.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert a 3D model?
Drop your model into the upload box above (or click to browse) and pick the target format. The converted file downloads automatically.
Is 3D conversion free?
Yes. All 3D converters are free with no sign-up required. Pro unlocks larger files and batch conversion.
Which format is best for the web or AR?
GLB and GLTF are ideal for web and AR viewers, while USDZ is best for Apple AR Quick Look.
Will my model's geometry and textures be preserved?
We keep geometry intact, and textures and materials are carried over wherever the target format supports them.
Are my files safe?
Yes. Files are transferred securely, processed privately, and deleted automatically after conversion.
What format do I need for 3D printing?
STL is the most widely accepted format for slicers and 3D printers. If your printer or slicer needs color/material data too, 3MF is a modern alternative that STL doesn't support.
Why do CAD files use STEP or IGES instead of OBJ?
STEP and IGES store precise, editable solid geometry used in engineering, while OBJ and STL only describe a triangulated surface mesh. Converting between them lets CAD data move into 3D printing or visualization tools and vice versa.
