About Image Converters

The everyday pairs are the obvious ones — HEIC photos from an iPhone into JPG so Windows and email will open them, PNG into WebP or AVIF to cut page weight, images into PDF for a form that refuses to accept anything else. Those cover most of what people arrive here for.
The rest of the category exists for files that ordinary image software simply will not open. Camera RAW from Nikon, Canon, Sony, Fujifilm, Olympus, Panasonic, Pentax, Samsung and Sigma bodies is decoded with LibRaw, using the camera's own white balance. Photoshop PSD and PSB, Illustrator AI and GIMP XCF are flattened without the application that made them. Radiance HDR and OpenEXR renders are tone-mapped down to a viewable range, and DDS, TGA and PCX game textures — including DXT and BC block compression — are unpacked into normal images. JPEG XL converts in both directions, which matters now that browsers have dropped support for it.
What each conversion can and cannot preserve is set by the formats, not by us: JPG has no alpha channel, so transparency becomes white; tracing a PNG to SVG produces a single-colour outline rather than a colour copy; and a lossy source cannot regain detail it never recorded. What image formats are supported?

Is image conversion free?
Yes, with no watermark and no cap on how many files you convert. Guests can upload files up to 50MB and a free account raises that to 100MB. Camera RAW files are separately capped at 80MB each because decoding them is memory-intensive.
Will converting reduce my image quality?
It depends on the target. PNG and TIFF are lossless and preserve the image exactly. JPG, WebP, AVIF and HEIC are lossy — MiConvert encodes at high quality settings (JPEG 90, WebP 85, AVIF 80) where the difference is not visible at normal viewing sizes, but it is a real reduction and it is permanent. Converting a lossy file to a lossless format locks in the current quality; it cannot restore detail that was already discarded.
Why won't my iPhone HEIC photo open on Windows or in an email?
HEIC wraps an HEVC-encoded image, and HEVC carries patent licensing obligations that keep it out of browsers and much of Windows. Windows 11 can display HEIC after installing Microsoft's free HEIF Image Extensions; converting to JPG or PNG avoids the problem everywhere at once.
Which format should I use for a website — JPG, WebP or AVIF?
AVIF gives the smallest files at a given visual quality and is supported by every current major browser. WebP is slightly larger but has a longer tail of support and encodes faster. JPG remains the safest fallback for old browsers, email and desktop software. A common setup is AVIF with a WebP or JPG fallback.
What happens to transparency when I convert?
PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, TIFF and ICO keep an alpha channel. JPG does not — transparent areas become white, which is the single most common surprise in these conversions. PDF pages are opaque too, so transparency is composited onto the page background.
Can I convert camera RAW files here?
Yes. MiConvert first extracts the full-resolution JPEG your camera embedded in the file, so colours match the Picture Style or Picture Control that was active when you shot. If no usable preview exists the file is demosaiced with LibRaw, falling back to RawTherapee for newer bodies. Keep the RAW originals — a converted JPG or PNG no longer has the editing latitude they hold.
Are my uploaded images safe?
Files are transferred over an encrypted connection, processed privately and deleted automatically from the servers shortly after conversion. They are never shared or reused. For genuinely sensitive documents, an offline tool avoids the upload entirely — a reasonable precaution with any online service.
