Why convert WebP to JPG
WebP is Google's web image format, and most sites now serve it instead of JPEG because it needs fewer bytes for the same picture. The problem shows up the moment the file leaves the browser. Plenty of upload forms, older photo editors, print ordering pages, product-listing tools and shared-drive previewers still check the extension and reject .webp, or show nothing at all. That is why the usual reason for this conversion is not quality, it is getting a file something else will accept.
On MiConvert the file is uploaded to our servers and decoded with libvips (the library behind sharp), then re-encoded as a baseline JPEG at quality 90 with 4:2:0 chroma subsampling. Pixel dimensions are not touched, so a 1600 by 1200 WebP comes back as a 1600 by 1200 JPG. The image is auto-oriented first, which means rotation stored in the source is applied to the pixels rather than left as a flag.
What you keep: every pixel of the first frame, at the original size, in sRGB. What changes: transparency has to go, because JPEG has no alpha channel. Our encoder normally mattes transparent areas onto white, but when the visible artwork is very light it mattes onto black instead so a pale logo does not disappear. Wide-gamut input such as Adobe RGB is converted to sRGB, and no EXIF or ICC profile is written into the JPG, so camera tags and color profiles from the source are not carried over. If the WebP is fully transparent there is nothing left to encode and the job returns an empty-output error.
This page is for people who downloaded an image from a site and need it in a format Windows, macOS, Android and web apps all handle without extra plugins, and for anyone whose destination only takes .jpg or .jpeg. Because the work happens server-side, the operating system you are on makes no difference: a phone browser gets the same result as a desktop one.
How to convert a WebP file to JPG
- Check whether your WebP has transparency or animation. If transparency matters to you, convert to PNG instead; if the animation matters, see the FAQ below.

WebP to JPG questions
Does the JPG keep my WebP's transparent background?
No. JPEG has no alpha channel, so transparent areas are filled in during encoding, normally with white and with black when the visible artwork is very light. If you need the transparency, use our WebP to PNG conversion instead, which keeps the alpha channel intact.
What happens to an animated WebP?
On this page you get frame one only, as a single JPG. JPEG cannot store animation. If you want to keep the motion, convert the animated WebP to GIF, where the frames and their delays are kept (the animation is downscaled to 1024 px on the long edge), or to TIFF, which writes one page per frame.
Can I convert WebP to JPG in bulk?
You can send a batch in one request, up to 10 files as a guest or with a free account, 25 on Plus and 50 on Pro. Each converted file is downloaded separately, and there is no folder upload and no combined archive download, so very large libraries are better handled with a local tool.
Will the image lose quality?
Most WebP files are already lossy, so this is a second lossy pass. At quality 90 the difference is subtle on photographs, but flat color areas, screenshots and small text can pick up visible ringing. The JPG is also often larger than the WebP you started with, since JPEG is the less efficient codec.
Does it work on Mac, Windows, Android or Linux?
Yes, from any modern browser. Nothing is installed and nothing runs on your device: the file is uploaded, converted on our servers and sent back as a download link.
Is JPG the same thing as JPEG?
Yes. They are the same format, and .jpg only exists because older systems allowed three-letter extensions. Our output uses the .jpg extension and any program that opens JPEG files will open it.
My conversion failed. What went wrong?
Two causes are common. A file that is actually a video renamed to .webp is rejected with a message telling you to use the video converter. A very large image, over roughly 268 megapixels, hits the decoder's pixel limit and needs to be downscaled first. A fully transparent WebP also fails, because there is no visible content to write.
How long do you keep my files?
Your uploaded WebP is deleted as soon as the job finishes, and the converted JPG stays available for about four hours before it is deleted automatically. The download link is a long random token, it is not listed anywhere, and it is not single-use, so treat it as private. File names and technical details of the job are logged on our side.
