Why convert WebP to PNG
WebP is Google's web image format. Browsers read it without complaint, which is why so many images saved from the web land on your disk as .webp, but the moment you move that file somewhere else the support gets patchy: older versions of Photoshop and Office, many print and prepress tools, some content management systems and plenty of Windows and Android apps either refuse the file or show nothing. PNG is the oldest widely supported format that still carries an alpha channel, so it is the usual landing spot for a WebP you need to actually work with.
MiConvert decodes the WebP on our servers with libvips through sharp, then writes a PNG at compression level 6. The pixel values and the alpha plane are copied from the decode without requantization, so a logo with a soft, feathered edge keeps every intermediate alpha value rather than being reduced to hard edges or matted onto white. If the WebP carries an EXIF orientation tag, the pixels are rotated upright before the PNG is written.
Two things change. Metadata is not carried across: the PNG is written without EXIF or an embedded ICC profile, and a wide-gamut source such as Adobe RGB is converted to sRGB during the decode, which shifts saturated colors slightly. Animation is also dropped on this pair, because PNG has no animation of its own in this pipeline; an animated WebP becomes its first frame, or one PNG per frame in a ZIP when you pick "Every frame". File size almost always goes up, since PNG stores every pixel instead of discarding detail the way lossy WebP does.
The people who land here are usually trying to finish something else: opening a downloaded WebP in an editor that will not read it, uploading artwork to a store or printer that accepts PNG and JPG only, or reusing a transparent WebP icon in a slide deck or app project.
How to convert WebP to PNG
- Check that the file is a real WebP and not a renamed JPG or video. We sniff the content, and a video saved with an image extension is rejected with a message pointing you to the video converter.
- If the WebP is animated, choose "First frame only" for one PNG or "Every frame as a separate image (ZIP)" to get them all.

Will the transparent background stay transparent?
Yes. The alpha channel is read from the WebP and written into the PNG unchanged, including soft and semi-transparent pixels. Nothing is flattened onto white or black on this pair.
Is WebP to PNG lossless?
The conversion step is lossless: the PNG stores exactly the pixels that came out of the WebP decoder. If the original WebP was saved with lossy compression, the detail it threw away at that time is gone for good and no converter can bring it back.
What happens to an animated WebP?
By default you get a single PNG of the first frame. Pick "Every frame as a separate image (ZIP)" to get one full PNG per frame plus a timings.txt with each frame's delay. To keep it playing as an animation, convert the WebP to GIF instead, or keep it as WebP.
Why is my PNG bigger than the WebP?
That is the expected trade. PNG compression never discards pixels, while WebP usually does, so a photographic image can grow several times over. For photos where you do not need an alpha channel, converting to JPG gives a much smaller file.
Can I convert a folder of WebP files at once?
You can convert up to 10 files in a single batch without an account, 25 on Plus and 50 on Pro. There is no folder upload, and each PNG is downloaded individually; only the frames of an animated WebP come as a ZIP. For hundreds of files, a desktop tool such as ImageMagick is the better fit.
Is there a browser extension or an offline way to do this?
MiConvert is a web service with no extension to install, and the conversion runs on our servers rather than in your browser. Offline, Windows 11's Paint can open a WebP and save it as PNG, and on Linux ImageMagick's convert command does the same job.
Does renaming the file to .png work instead?
No. The extension does not change the encoding, so most software either fails outright or still reads WebP data. The pixels have to be decoded and re-encoded, which is what happens here.
What happens to my files after the conversion?
Your uploaded WebP is deleted as soon as the job finishes. The PNG stays on our download server for about 4 hours and is then removed automatically. The download link is a long random token and is not tied to your account, so treat it as private; file names, sizes and outcomes are kept in our logs. The conversion is free and needs no sign-up.
