WebP to GIF Converter - Keeps Animation | MiConvert

Convert WebP to GIF Online

Upload an animated or static WebP and get a GIF back, with frame order, frame delays and looping carried over from animations. GIF holds 256 colors per image, so expect some banding.

Why convert WebP to GIF

WebP comes in three flavors that all share one extension: lossy stills, lossless stills, and animations with their own frame timing. Browsers handle all of them, which is why so many images saved from the web land on your disk as .webp. The trouble starts everywhere else: older image editors, presentation tools, email signature builders, some forum and marketplace upload fields, and plenty of in-house software still only recognize .gif for a moving image.

Our converter takes two different routes depending on what is inside the file. An animated WebP is sent through ffmpeg, which analyzes the real frames to build a 256-color palette instead of using a fixed web palette; the frames are then expanded with ImageMagick and written as a looping GIF, and gifsicle runs an optimization pass to cut repeated pixel data between frames. A static WebP goes straight to ImageMagick with 256-color quantization. Everything happens on our servers after the upload, so nothing has to be installed.

What survives is the structure of the animation: the number of frames, the delay on each frame, looping, and one-bit transparency where a pixel is either fully visible or fully clear. What changes is the picture itself: color depth drops to a 256-entry palette so photographic frames and gradients show banding and dithering, WebP's partial alpha is flattened to hard on-or-off edges, and animations are downscaled to 1024 pixels on the long side while stills larger than 2048 pixels are reduced as well. Pixels are auto-oriented, and no EXIF or color profile is written into the GIF.

This page suits people who need a short loop in a place that refuses WebP: a product listing, a knowledge-base article, a chat or forum post, an older email client, or a slide deck. If you only want a still picture you can open anywhere, WebP to PNG keeps full color and real transparency, and WebP to JPG gives a smaller photo file; both are better choices than GIF for single images.

How to convert WebP to GIF

  1. Check what you have. If the WebP is animated and you want to keep every frame, upload it as it is; if you only need one picture, a PNG or JPG target will look far better than a 256-color GIF.
  2. If the file is a huge still (very large scans or AI-generated upscales can exceed our pixel ceiling), downscale it in an editor first. Files are limited to 50 MB without an account and 100 MB with a free one.
  3. Drop the .webp file onto this page, or pick several; up to 10 files go into one job on the guest and free tiers.
  4. Start the conversion. A small animation or still is normally done in a second or two; long animations with many large frames take noticeably longer, because every frame is palettized and then re-optimized.
  5. Download the GIF and test it where you intend to use it. The download link stays valid for about 4 hours.
  6. If the loop looks heavier than expected, trim unused frames or shrink the source in an editor before converting again, since there are no frame-rate or color settings on this page.

What this converter does

  • Keeps animation: frame order, the delay stored on each frame, and looping are carried into the GIF.
  • Builds the 256-color palette from the frames in your file, rather than snapping colors to a generic palette.
  • Runs a gifsicle optimization pass on the finished animation to remove pixel data that repeats between frames.
  • Handles lossy, lossless and animated WebP; a JPEG XL file saved with a .webp name is detected and decoded, and a video file renamed to an image extension is rejected with a clear message.
  • Keeps one-bit transparency from the WebP, so clear areas stay clear instead of filling with a background color.
  • Converts up to 10 WebP files in one job on the free tiers (25 on Plus, 50 on Pro), each producing its own GIF.

Questions about WebP to GIF

Will my animated WebP stay animated?

Yes. Animated WebP is one of the few sources where every frame is kept: the frames, their individual delays and looping all transfer to the GIF. Only the color depth and the maximum pixel size change.

What happens to transparency?

GIF supports one transparent palette entry, so transparency is kept but becomes all-or-nothing. Soft, semi-transparent edges in the WebP turn into hard edges, which can look jagged against a background that differs from the one the artwork was designed on. If soft transparency matters, convert WebP to PNG instead.

Why does the GIF look worse and weigh more than the WebP?

GIF stores at most 256 colors per image and uses LZW compression, while WebP stores millions of colors and compresses frames far more efficiently, so a photographic loop shows dithering and banding and can grow several times larger even after the gifsicle pass. Shortening the clip or reducing its dimensions before upload is the practical way to keep the file small.

I got "GIF conversion failed: Input image exceeds pixel limit". What now?

This is the most common failure on this pair. The image is above the pixel ceiling our decoders allow (roughly 268 megapixels, with a separate 16,000-pixel-per-side cap in ImageMagick). Open the file in an editor, resize it to something reasonable for a GIF, and convert again. Enormous upscaled stills are the usual culprit.

Is there an offline, desktop or Android version?

No. MiConvert is a website and the conversion runs on our servers, so you need a connection; there is no installable app, and nothing is processed on your phone or computer. You can use the page from a mobile browser and save the GIF to your device.

Can I convert a whole folder of WebP files at once?

You can select up to 10 files per job without an account or with a free account (25 on Plus, 50 on Pro). Each one is converted separately and downloaded separately; there is no single ZIP of the batch and no folder upload. Very large collections have to be sent in several jobs.

Can I set the frame rate, size, loop count or number of colors?

No. This page has no options: the palette is fixed at 256 colors, animations are capped at 1024 pixels on the long side, stills at 2048, and the GIF is written as a looping animation. To control dimensions or timing, edit the WebP first, or edit the resulting GIF in a dedicated GIF editor afterwards.

What happens to my file after the conversion?

The upload travels over HTTPS to our servers and is deleted as soon as the job finishes. The finished GIF stays available through an unguessable download link for about 4 hours, then it is deleted automatically. We do log file names, sizes and outcomes for operations, and signed-in accounts keep a conversion history entry.
