Why Convert PNG to GIF?
GIF has been around since 1987 and stores an indexed image: a palette of at most 256 colors plus LZW compression. PNG does the opposite, holding millions of colors and a full alpha channel. That makes PNG the better format almost everywhere, which is exactly why people end up here: some forum software, legacy content systems, email templates, older game tools and device firmware still check the extension and only let a .gif through.
On our servers the PNG is decoded and quantized down to a 256-color palette with ImageMagick, then the finished GIF is run through gifsicle's strongest optimization pass to strip redundant data. One extra behavior is worth knowing: if the long edge is over 2048 pixels, the image is scaled down before the palette is built, so an oversized PNG comes back smaller in pixels than it went in.
Flat artwork, line drawings, screenshots of UI, charts and logos usually survive the palette squeeze with no visible difference, because they never used more than a couple of hundred colors. Photographs, skies, soft shadows and any smooth gradient will show banding or dithering patterns once they are forced into 256 entries. Transparency is carried over, but GIF only stores it as a single on or off bit per pixel, so antialiased edges and soft drop shadows become hard and slightly ragged instead of fading out.

How to Convert PNG to GIF
- Check the edges in your PNG. If the subject has a soft cut-out edge or a glow, flatten it onto the background color you plan to use, since GIF cannot keep partial transparency.
- Check the pixel size. Keep the long edge at 2048 pixels or less if you need the output dimensions to match the input exactly, otherwise the image is scaled down during conversion.
- Upload the PNG. Up to 10 files go into a single job on guest and free accounts, and each one comes back as its own GIF.
- Let the conversion run. These are small jobs and typically finish within a few seconds of upload.
- Download the GIF within about four hours, after which the link expires and the file is deleted.

Can I make an animated GIF out of several PNG frames?
No. This page converts each uploaded PNG independently and returns one static GIF per file, so uploading ten frames gives you ten separate GIFs, not a sequence. Will transparency survive the conversion?
Yes, but only as fully transparent or fully opaque pixels. GIF has no alpha channel, just one palette slot marked transparent. Pixels that were partly see-through in the PNG, which is most antialiased outlines and every soft shadow, get pushed to one extreme or the other, so edges can look stepped. If that matters, flatten the PNG onto the final background color first and convert a fully opaque image.
Why does my photo look blotchy as a GIF?
Because 256 colors cannot describe a photograph. Smooth tonal areas turn into visible bands or a dither pattern once the palette is built. There is no quality or palette setting on this page to soften that. If the destination accepts anything else, PNG or JPG will look far better; if it insists on GIF, a smaller image or flatter, more graphic artwork hides the banding.
Will the GIF animate when I post it on a chat platform?
No. The file you get here holds a single frame, so platforms that show animated GIFs will display it as a still image. Static GIF emoji and stickers behave like ordinary pictures.
My PNG is an APNG. Do the frames come through?
Do not count on it. The PNG decoder on this path treats an animated PNG as a still image and gives you its first frame. Convert the APNG to WebP or GIF from its original animation source if you need the motion preserved.
Will the GIF be smaller than my PNG?
For flat-color graphics and screenshots, often yes, because the palette plus LZW plus the gifsicle pass compresses that kind of content well. For photographic content the dithering added during quantization can make the GIF no smaller, and sometimes larger, than the original PNG. GIF is a compatibility choice, not a compression choice.
How many files can I convert, and how large?
Guest and free accounts upload up to 10 files per job at 50 MB per file, raised to 100 MB per file once you have a free account. Plus allows 25 files at 200 MB, Pro 50 files at 1 GB. There is also an hourly cap of 10 conversion jobs per IP on the free tiers, with one job meaning one batch.
Does the conversion happen on my computer?
No. The PNG is uploaded over HTTPS and converted by a worker on our servers. The upload is deleted as soon as the job ends, and the GIF stays available through a random download link for about four hours before being removed automatically. File names, sizes and outcomes are logged for monitoring.
