What Changes When a PNG Becomes a JPG
PNG stores every pixel exactly and supports transparency, which is perfect for logos, screenshots and graphics and wasteful for photographs, where lossless compression finds few patterns to exploit. JPG throws away detail the eye is unlikely to miss and is the format nearly every upload form, marketplace, job portal and email client takes without question.
MiConvert decodes the PNG with libvips (via the Sharp library) and writes a baseline JPEG at quality 90. If the PNG has transparency, the converter first measures how bright the visible artwork is, weighting each pixel by its opacity. Ordinary artwork is placed on white. If the artwork is very light (a white logo, say), it is placed on black instead, because white on white would leave you with an empty-looking picture. A PNG that is completely transparent is refused with an explanation rather than turned into a blank JPG.
The JPEG uses 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, the standard setting, which halves color resolution and can blur thin colored lines or small red text slightly. Metadata is not written: no text chunks, no EXIF, no embedded color profile. EXIF orientation, when present, is applied to the pixels first. Animated PNGs give a single frame, and 16-bit images become 8-bit.
If Sharp cannot read a PNG, ImageMagick gets a second attempt before the job is reported as failed. A file that defeats both is almost always truncated or not really a PNG.
How to Convert PNG to JPG
- If you need a particular background color behind transparent areas, add it in your editor before exporting the PNG; the converter only chooses between white and black.

Questions About PNG to JPG
What color does my transparent background become?
White in most cases. The converter switches to black only when the visible artwork is predominantly very light, so a white logo stays readable. For any other color, add a background layer before exporting the PNG.
Why did my PNG fail with "ImageMagick conversion failed"?
Both decoders tried and neither could read the file, which nearly always means it is damaged: a partial download, a broken export, or a different file type given a .png name. Re-download or re-export it, and open it in an image viewer first to confirm it displays.
What does the "macOS resource fork" error mean?
You uploaded a ._ file that macOS creates alongside real files when copying to external drives. It holds metadata, not pixels. Upload the file with the same name minus the ._ prefix.
Will converting to JPG make my file smaller?
For photographs, usually by a large margin. For screenshots, charts and flat graphics it can go the other way, with visible fuzz around text, because those images are exactly what PNG compresses well.
Does the JPG keep EXIF or the color profile?
No. The JPG is written without metadata or an embedded profile, which is fine for sRGB images. Wide-gamut images exported with a Display P3 or Adobe RGB profile may shift slightly in color, so check them.
Can I convert PNG to JPG on an iPhone or Android phone?
