Why HEIC Photos Need Converting
HEIC is the container Apple has used for camera photos since iOS 11. Inside sits an HEVC-encoded image, and decoding HEVC needs a licensed codec, so the same photo that previews instantly in Photos can show as a blank thumbnail on Windows 10, older Android builds, webmail previews and upload forms. JPG has none of those gaps.
On this page the decoding is done on our servers by ImageMagick with libheif, not in your browser. The decoded image is auto-oriented, so a portrait shot taken sideways comes out upright instead of rotated, and then written as a JPEG at quality 90. There is no quality slider, no resolution setting and no DPI field: one upload gives one JPG per photo at fixed settings.
What survives: the pixels, and the EXIF block, including the capture date and time, the camera model, and the GPS coordinates if location was on when the photo was taken. That makes this conversion unusual among our image tools, most of which drop metadata. What does not survive: HEIC's extra payloads. If the file is a multi-image collection or a Live-style animated HEIC, only the primary image is converted. Depth maps, edits stored as separate layers and alpha channels are not carried into JPG, which has no transparency channel at all. The JPG is also a re-encode rather than a copy of the original data, and it is normally a noticeably larger file than the HEIC it came from, because HEVC compresses more aggressively than JPEG.
How to Convert HEIC to JPG Here
- Get the originals off the phone first. AirDrop, iCloud download and USB transfer all keep HEIC; emailing from the Photos app sometimes silently converts to JPG, which is why some of your photos already open fine.
- If you copied the photos on a Mac, upload the real image file, not the companion file whose name starts with ._ . Those are macOS resource forks and the converter rejects them.
- Select your .heic or .heif files on this page. Both extensions are accepted as HEIC. Guests can send up to 10 files per batch at up to 50 MB each; a free account raises the per-file limit to 100 MB.
- Start the conversion and wait. Most phone photos finish within a couple of seconds of the upload completing, and each HEIC becomes its own JPG.
- Download each JPG from the results list. The links stay valid for about four hours, so save them before you close the tab.
- Check one image before sending the batch on, especially if the photo came from burst or portrait mode, where HEIC files carry more than one picture.

How do I convert HEIC to JPG on an iPhone or a Mac?
On the iPhone, open the photo in the Photos app and share it through an option that re-encodes, or set Settings, Camera, Formats, Most Compatible so new shots are captured as JPG; photos you already took stay HEIC. On a Mac, Preview can export one or two images with File, Export, JPEG. This page is the practical route when you have a folder of them, or when you are not on Apple hardware at all.
What about Windows and Android?
On Windows 11 and recent Windows 10 builds, Microsoft's HEIF Image Extensions let Photos and Explorer display HEIC, but that only makes the files viewable; it does not create JPGs that other software will accept. Android support depends on the manufacturer's gallery app. Converting to JPG avoids both lotteries.
Does converting to JPG lose quality?
There is one re-encode: the HEVC image is decoded and saved as JPEG at quality 90. At normal viewing and print sizes that is not something you will see. The visible change is file size, since JPEG needs more bytes than HEVC for the same picture. Keep the HEIC originals if you intend to keep editing and re-saving.
Will the date and location stay in the photo?
Yes. The capture date, camera model and GPS coordinates are copied into the JPG. That is useful for sorting photos by date, and worth remembering before you publish images, because anyone who downloads the JPG can read where it was taken. Remove location in your photo app before converting if that matters.
Can I convert HEIC straight to PDF or to JPEG XL here?
Not today, and we would rather say so: our HEIC to PDF path fails on every file, and HEIC to JXL currently writes a HEIC file with a .jxl name. Convert the photo to JPG on this page first, then use our JPG to PDF page, which merges several images into one document with page size and margin options.
How many photos can I do at once, and is it really free?
Up to 10 photos per request without an account, 25 on Plus and 50 on Pro, within an hourly cap of 10 conversion jobs per IP address for guests. It is free and no sign-up is required; signing in only raises the file size limit. There is no zip-all button, so each JPG is downloaded separately.
What happens to my photos after the conversion?
The HEIC you uploaded is deleted as soon as the job finishes. The JPGs stay on our download server for about four hours behind a random link, then they are deleted automatically. The conversion runs on our servers, not in your browser, and file names, sizes and outcomes are logged for operations; if you are signed in, a history row with the first file name is kept on your account.
