How an ARW Is Turned Into a JPG
ARW is Sony's TIFF-based RAW container for Alpha and RX cameras. Depending on the body and the menu setting, the sensor data inside is uncompressed, lossy-compressed or lossless-compressed, and all three need a RAW decoder before they become a viewable picture. Browsers, social networks and most office software have no such decoder, so an ARW attached to a message tends to arrive as an unknown file.
Sony does embed a JPEG preview, but only a small one: around 1616×1080 or 1920×1080 pixels, even on a 61-megapixel body. MiConvert ships an embedded preview only when its long edge reaches 90% of the full sensor size, so Sony previews never qualify. Every ARW therefore goes through a full decode. LibRaw demosaics the sensor data with AHD interpolation, applies the white balance the camera recorded, converts to sRGB and saves a quality-90 JPEG at the sensor's full resolution.
The server's system LibRaw dates from 2020. When it has no color data for a newer body, a current LibRaw build runs first instead, and RawTherapee and dcraw serve as further fallbacks; that is how files such as lossless-compressed ARW from a ZV-E1 or A1 II get decoded.
Starting from sensor data means Sony's in-camera processing is not reproduced. Creative Look or Creative Style, DRO, lens compensation for distortion and vignetting, and noise reduction (the main decoder applies none) are all absent, so the JPG can look flatter, or grainier at high ISO, than the JPEG your camera writes. Portrait shots are rotated upright by the decoder, and no EXIF tags are written to the output.
That makes this page a fit for Sony shooters who need JPGs to share, print or upload and do not want to install Imaging Edge or pay for Lightroom, and who are happy with a straight, unstyled development of the shot.
How to Convert Sony ARW to JPG
- Find the ARW files on the card (names like DSC01234.ARW) and skip anything beginning with "._", which macOS creates as metadata and which holds no image.
- Check sizes before uploading. RAW files above 80MB are refused, which rules out uncompressed ARW from 50- and 61-megapixel bodies; files above 50MB also need a signed-in account.
- Add up to 10 ARWs per batch, or 25 with Plus and 50 with Pro. The output is preset to JPG.
- Let the decode run. Because each ARW is developed from its sensor data instead of copied from a preview, expect a few seconds per photo.
- Download the JPGs and keep the ARWs as your editable originals.

Why does my JPG look different from the JPEG my Sony camera makes?
Your camera's JPEG includes Sony's processing: Creative Look, DRO, lens corrections and noise reduction. This converter develops the raw sensor data with LibRaw and only applies the recorded white balance, so contrast, color and grain can differ. If you need Sony's own look, Sony's Imaging Edge Desktop develops ARW files with the camera maker's processing.
How do I convert ARW to JPG without losing quality?
Some loss is built into the formats: ARW holds 12 or 14 bits per channel, a JPG holds 8 and is compressed. MiConvert keeps the full sensor resolution and encodes at quality 90, which is hard to tell apart from the source at normal viewing sizes. The real loss is editing headroom, so keep the ARW.
Is there a Sony ARW to JPG converter that does not need software?

Does the converted JPG keep my EXIF data?
No. Exposure time, f-number, ISO, the lens model, GPS position and the capture timestamp are all missing from the JPG. If you need those tags, copy them from the original afterward with exiftool -TagsFromFile DSC01234.ARW DSC01234.jpg.
My ARW is larger than 80MB. What can I do?
RAW conversion is capped at 80MB per file, and uncompressed files from 50- and 61-megapixel bodies go over it. Switch the camera's RAW file type to compressed or lossless-compressed for future shoots; for existing files, export a JPG in Imaging Edge or Lightroom.
Can I convert a whole card of ARW files at once?
In batches: 10 files per run without a subscription, 25 with Plus, 50 with Pro. Each file is decoded independently, so one problem file does not hold up the others.
What happens to my ARW files after I convert them?
Your ARW is removed from our server once its JPG has been produced, and the JPG itself is swept away by a timed cleanup job roughly sixty minutes later. Decoding happens on our machines rather than on your device.
