Why Convert ARW to PNG?
JPG discards a little detail every time it is written. If the ARW conversion is the first step in a compositing or retouching workflow, each subsequent save compounds that loss. PNG stores exactly what it was given, every time.
The trade is size. A 24MP frame lands around 5-8MB as a quality-90 JPG and 30-60MB as a PNG. For archiving or web delivery that is a bad deal; for a file about to be edited repeatedly it is the correct one.

If it is a real preview rather than a thumbnail, that image is used directly — no re-processing, and the colours match exactly what you saw on the camera screen. When no usable preview exists, the file is demosaiced with LibRaw using the camera's own white balance and output in sRGB. Note that when the camera preview is used, the source of the PNG is a JPEG the camera already compressed — PNG preserves it perfectly from that point on, but cannot undo compression that happened inside the camera.

Not as produced here. The output is 8 bits per channel, the same depth as a JPG. PNG can technically store 16-bit, but the conversion pipeline normalises to 8-bit — so keep the ARW if you need the full tonal range for heavy grading.
