JPEG XL is technically the more ambitious format — it can losslessly re-encode existing JPEGs, supports very high bit depths, and decodes progressively. What it lacks is adoption. Chrome removed support in 2023 and no mainstream operating system opens it by default.
HEIC is not widely supported either, but it is supported in the place that matters for photo libraries: every iPhone, iPad and recent Mac handles it natively, and it is what iOS writes by default.
