Why Convert RAW to JPG?
RAW is not one format. It is a dozen incompatible ones sharing a job description, and a decoder that handles Canon may know nothing about Fujifilm's X-Trans sensor layout or Sigma's Foveon files. That is why "my RAW files won't open" is such a common complaint even on up-to-date machines.
MiConvert first looks for the full-resolution JPEG your camera already embedded in the file. If it is a real preview rather than a thumbnail, that image is used directly — no re-processing, and the colours match exactly what you saw on the camera screen. When no usable preview exists, the file is demosaiced with LibRaw using the camera's own white balance and output in sRGB. When that route is not available the file passes through LibRaw, then RawTherapee — which carries its own decoders for newer bodies LibRaw has not caught up with, such as Canon's R5 Mark II CRAW and Fujifilm's compressed RAF.
The result is a normal 8-bit JPG at quality 90: small enough to email, universally readable, and finished. What it no longer has is the raw file's editing headroom, so convert copies and keep your originals.
