What this converter does with a RAW file
RAW is not one format. Each manufacturer wraps unprocessed sensor readings in its own container — NEF, CR2, CR3, ARW, RAF, ORF, RW2, PEF, SRW, X3F and DNG — and the data inside is a mosaic of single-color photosites rather than a picture, so browsers, phone galleries and webmail previews have nothing to display until something interpolates the colors and maps them into a display color space.
The first step here is to look for the JPEG your camera already embedded. exiftool pulls JpgFromRaw, then PreviewImage if that slot is empty, and the preview is used only when its long edge reaches 90 percent of the long edge of a full decode — which keeps 1920-pixel screen previews out of your results. A qualifying upright preview is copied out byte for byte, with the camera's own compression and its own Picture Control or Picture Style; if the orientation flag says the frame must be rotated, sharp re-encodes it at JPEG quality 90 after rotation. Nikon bodies and iPhone ProRAW DNGs have been verified to carry full-size previews. Sony ARW (1616 or 1920 pixels) and Fujifilm RAF (1920 pixels) never do.
Everything else is fully demosaiced. dcraw_emu from LibRaw 0.20.2 runs first with camera white balance, AHD interpolation and 8-bit sRGB TIFF output, then rawtherapee-cli 5.9 with its default profile, then libraw-wasm 1.6.0, which carries a current LibRaw build and reads bodies the 2020 release never saw — Sony ZV-E1 and A1 II lossless ARW, Canon R5 Mark II CRAW, Fujifilm X-H2 compressed RAF. For cameras newer than about 2020, where LibRaw 0.20 has no color matrix, libraw-wasm goes first instead; dcraw 9.28 is the last fallback. The TIFF is then encoded by sharp at JPEG quality 90.
What survives: framing, resolution (on the Nikon D90 we tested, the preview was 4288x2848 against a 4310x2868 sensor readout — a full-size preview can be a few pixels short of the decode) and orientation, which is baked into the pixels. What does not survive: all EXIF, including date, body, lens, ISO, shutter and GPS, plus any ICC profile. The 8-bit lossy output also has none of the RAW's editing headroom, so convert copies and keep the originals.
How to convert a RAW file to JPG
- Copy the original file off the memory card completely before converting. Half-copied RAW files are the most common failure here — a file padded with zeros or 0xFF bytes is rejected with a message telling you to copy it again.
- Check the size. RAW uploads are capped at 80 MB per file on every plan, and as a guest your overall upload limit is 50 MB (100 MB with a free account). Uncompressed 14-bit files from 45–61 MP bodies often exceed the cap; shoot compressed RAW or convert to DNG first.
- Drop the file onto the upload area. The extension is read case-insensitively, and a generic .raw file is identified by LibRaw from its contents rather than its name. You can send up to 10 files in one batch without an account.
- Leave JPG selected as the target and start the conversion. A copied preview is quick; a Sony, Fujifilm or other small-preview body needs a full demosaic, which took about 1.7 seconds for a test ARW and can take a few seconds per frame.
- Download each JPG from the direct link. The link stays valid for about four hours after the job completes.
- If you need the shooting data back, run exiftool -TagsFromFile against the original RAW on your own machine. Nothing we write carries EXIF, so we cannot add it for you.
What the converter actually gives you

Frequently asked questions
Can I convert RAW to JPG without losing quality?
No converter can. JPG is 8-bit and lossy, so the 12- or 14-bit sensor data and its editing latitude are gone. What we avoid is a second loss: when your camera embedded a full-size JPEG and the frame is already upright, that file is copied out untouched instead of re-compressed. Keep the RAW originals as your archive.
Does the JPG keep the date, camera model and GPS coordinates?
No. Neither path writes EXIF — sharp outputs no metadata, and the embedded JPEGs in Nikon NEFs carry none of their own. There is no ICC profile either. To get the shooting data back, run exiftool -TagsFromFile on your own machine to copy the tags from the RAW onto the converted JPG.
My conversion failed with "the camera model may not be supported, or the file may be corrupted" — what now?
That message means all four decoders refused the file. RAF, PEF, SRW and X3F files currently show a more technical "RAW conversion failed" string instead of this wording, but the causes below are the same. Usually it is an incomplete card or cloud copy, so re-copy the original and compare file sizes. Otherwise the body is unknown to LibRaw 0.20.2, RawTherapee 5.9 and libraw-wasm 1.6.0; converting to DNG with Adobe DNG Converter first often works.
Can I convert a whole shoot at once?
Not a whole shoot. One batch is 10 files for guests and free accounts, 25 on Plus and 50 on Pro, with an hourly cap of 10 conversion jobs per IP on the free tiers. For hundreds of frames, your camera maker's desktop software — NX Studio, Digital Photo Professional, Imaging Edge, OM Workspace — batch-converts locally and keeps the metadata.
Does this work with iPhone ProRAW files?
Yes. iPhone ProRAW is a DNG, and the ones we tested carry a full-size embedded preview, so the camera's own rendering is used directly. A test iPhone 12 Pro DNG with orientation flag 6 came out as a 3024x4032 upright JPG. If the files are still on the phone, the Photos app can export JPEG copies without any upload.
Will the colors match Lightroom, Camera Raw or my camera's screen?
On the preview path you get the camera's own JPEG file unchanged, so the rendering is the camera's own rather than ours. On the decode path it will not match Lightroom: the LibRaw rendering is neutral, with no tone curve, Picture Style, Active D-Lighting or Creative Look, so Sony and Fujifilm files in particular look flatter. Nikon previews shot in Adobe RGB are copied without an ICC profile and can look muted in some viewers.
Can I get TIFF, 16-bit PNG or WebP instead?
JPG, PNG and JXL are the only targets for RAW here, and both PNG and JXL are 8-bit. There is no RAW to TIFF, WebP, AVIF, HEIC or PDF route. PNG on the preview path is decoded from the camera's JPEG, so it inherits those artifacts; for 16-bit output, use RawTherapee or darktable on your own machine.
What happens to my RAW file after the conversion?
It is uploaded over HTTPS and converted on our servers, not in your browser. The uploaded RAW is deleted as soon as the job's final attempt ends. The finished JPG stays available through a random, unguessable download link for about four hours, then it is deleted automatically. File names, sizes and outcomes are logged, and signed-in accounts keep a conversion history row until the account is deleted.
