How a JPG Becomes a Windows Icon
An ICO file is a small container of several bitmaps of the same picture at different sizes. Windows picks whichever fits the spot: tiny icons in title bars and list views, medium ones on the desktop, the 256-pixel version for large icon views and high-DPI screens. A JPG holds a single bitmap with no transparency, so Windows will not use it for a folder, shortcut or program icon.
MiConvert first turns the photo upright according to its EXIF orientation, then fits it into a 256×256 square with Sharp. The whole image is kept: a non-square JPG is scaled until its longer side is 256 pixels and centered, with transparent bars filling the rest, so nothing is cropped or stretched. The png-to-ico library then derives the 48, 32 and 16 pixel versions from that square with bicubic resampling and writes all four as 32-bit images with an alpha channel.
A few consequences follow. Every image is stored uncompressed, so the .ico is a few hundred kilobytes whatever the size of your JPG. A JPG smaller than 256 pixels is enlarged and will look soft at the largest size. The JPG's own background stays opaque, because JPG has no transparency to carry over; only the padding is transparent. There are no 24 or 64 pixel entries, so Windows scales from the nearest size in those spots.

How to Convert JPG to ICO
- Crop the JPG to a square around the subject first; otherwise it is padded with transparent bars to make it square.
- Use a source at least 256 pixels on its longer side, and favor bold shapes and strong contrast over small text, which will not survive at 16 pixels.
- Upload the JPG, or several: ten per batch, 25 for Plus members, 50 for Pro. ICO is already set as the output.
- Convert and download the .ico file.
- For a Windows folder, right-click it, choose Properties, then Customize, Change Icon, and Browse to the .ico.

Which icon sizes are inside the ICO file?
Four: 16×16, 32×32, 48×48 and 256×256 pixels, each a 32-bit image with transparency. Windows and browsers choose the one that suits the place the icon is shown.
Can the white background of my JPG become transparent?
No. A JPG has no transparency, so its background is copied as it is; only the padding added to make the image square is transparent. Start from a PNG with a transparent background and use the PNG to ICO converter instead.
How do I set it as a folder or shortcut icon in Windows?
For a folder: Properties, Customize, Change Icon, Browse. For a desktop shortcut: Properties, then Change Icon on the Shortcut tab. Keep the .ico in a permanent location, since Windows reads it from that path.

At 16 pixels there is no room for detail, and JPEG compression noise in the source gets magnified. Simplify the design, raise the contrast, and start from the cleanest, largest JPG you have.
