What rotating a PDF actually changes
A PDF page carries its own orientation flag, called /Rotate. Scanners, phone camera apps and fax gateways often write pages the way the paper went through the feeder rather than the way you read them, so a document opens sideways or upside down even though the text inside is fine. Most viewers let you turn the view temporarily, but that setting is not saved with the file, so the next person who opens or prints it sees the sideways version again.
Our rotate tool uses pdf-lib on our servers. It loads your PDF, adds your chosen angle to each page's existing /Rotate value, and saves the document. Nothing is re-rendered or rasterized: the page content streams are copied unchanged, so text remains selectable and searchable, vector artwork stays vector, images are not re-encoded, and the output stays close to the original in size. Because the angle is added to what is already there, a page stored at 90 degrees and rotated by another 90 ends up at 180.
What survives: bookmarks, link annotations, fillable form fields and the document Title, because the file is loaded and saved rather than rebuilt page by page. What else changes: the Producer and Creator metadata is rewritten to pdf-lib, and because the whole file is rewritten rather than appended to, any existing cryptographic signature on the input will no longer validate. The output is not PDF/A and we do not add accessibility tags.
The honest limitation: this page sends one angle for the whole document. If your scan has five upright pages and three sideways ones, all eight will turn. For a mixed file, use Extract PDF Pages to pull out the pages that need turning, rotate that smaller file here, then rebuild the document with Merge PDF, bearing in mind that extracting and merging build a new document and drop bookmarks and form fields.
How to rotate a PDF file

Check that the PDF opens without a password. If a password is needed to view it, remove it first with our PDF password remover using that password; the rotate step cannot open an encrypted file.

Upload one PDF. This tool handles a single file per run, up to 50 MB as a guest, 100 MB with a free account, 200 MB on Plus and 1 GB on Pro.

Choose the angle: 90 degrees clockwise, 180 degrees upside down, or 270 degrees counter-clockwise. The default is 90 clockwise.

Start the job. The PDF is uploaded over HTTPS and rotated on our servers; the rotation step itself is quick, so most of the wait is the upload.

Download the result. It keeps your original file name with a .pdf extension, so save it under a new name if you want to keep the untouched copy.

Open it in any viewer to confirm the orientation, then print or share it. The orientation is now stored in the file, not in your viewer's settings.

Frequently asked questions
Can I rotate just one page, or only some pages? ▼
Not on this page: a single angle is sent for the whole document, so every page turns. For a file with mixed orientations, pull the affected pages out with Extract PDF Pages, rotate that file here, then rebuild the document with Merge PDF, which creates a new document and does not carry bookmarks or fillable fields through.
Will rotating reduce the quality of my scan? ▼
No. The rotation is recorded as a page attribute and the page content is copied unchanged, so images are not re-encoded and text is not converted to pixels. The output stays close to the original in size.
The page already looks rotated in my viewer. Why did it turn too far? ▼
Because your chosen angle is added to the rotation already stored in the file: a page saved at 90 degrees plus a 90-degree rotation becomes 180. If the result overshoots, rotate the output again, or start from the original and pick a different angle.
My PDF is password-protected. Can I still rotate it? ▼
If a password is needed to open the file, the job stops with a message asking you to remove it first; use our PDF password remover with that password, then rotate the decrypted copy. A PDF that opens freely but carries an owner or permissions password also fails here with an error saying the document is encrypted, and needs the owner password removed first.
I got an error saying the file could not be parsed. What now? ▼
That usually means the PDF is truncated or structurally damaged, or that a file named .pdf is not really a PDF. Run it through Repair PDF, which tries qpdf, mutool and Ghostscript in turn, then rotate the repaired file. If repair reports that all strategies are exhausted, too little of the file survives.
Why did I see "Unsupported PDF operation"? ▼
That message comes from requests that reach our PDF engine without naming a specific tool, which happens with API calls sending a generic convert action. Starting the job from this Rotate PDF page sends the rotate operation, so the error does not occur.
Can I rotate several PDFs in one go? ▼
No. This tool accepts one file per run, so multi-file scans have to be submitted one after another. Guest and free users are also limited to 10 conversion jobs per hour from one IP address.
What happens to my file after the conversion? ▼
The PDF is uploaded to our servers over HTTPS and the upload is deleted as soon as the job finishes. The rotated copy can be downloaded for about four hours through a random, unguessable link, then it is deleted automatically. We do log technical details such as file name, size and outcome, and signed-in users get a conversion history entry.
