Why Make a GIF from an MP4
GIF is a 1980s image format that can hold a sequence of frames, and that is its strength: it animates wherever an image is allowed, with no player, no play button and no sound. Chat apps, forums, issue trackers, wikis, slide decks and many email clients show it inline. MP4 is far more efficient, but it needs a video player and a site that accepts video, which is why a short reaction, a UI demo or a product loop often has to be a GIF.

Frames are sampled at 10 per second, the picture is scaled to 480 pixels wide with the height following the aspect ratio, and the frames are written as a GIF set to loop forever. GIF allows only 256 colors per frame, and this converter uses FFmpeg's default fixed 256-color palette rather than one built from your clip's own colors. Flat graphics, screen recordings, cartoons and text come through cleanly; skin tones, skies and soft gradients show banding or grain. Videos narrower than 480 pixels are enlarged to that width and look softer. There is no start or end picker, so a long MP4 becomes a long, heavy GIF: GIF compression is far weaker than video compression, and the file grows with every second.
