Why Convert 7Z to ZIP
7z is the native format of 7-Zip. Its LZMA and LZMA2 compression usually makes smaller archives than ZIP, which is why game mods, driver packs and software downloads are often shipped as .7z. The catch is on the receiving end: every version of Windows and macOS opens ZIP with built-in tools, while macOS, Windows 10 and most phones need an extra app before they can open a 7z, and many work laptops, school computers and less technical recipients cannot install one.
The conversion is a full unpack and re-pack, done on our server with the 7-Zip command-line tool. Your .7z is extracted to a temporary folder, then everything in it is compressed into a new ZIP with the standard Deflate method at 7-Zip's normal level. Files that Deflate cannot shrink, typically JPEG photos and MP4 videos, are stored as they are.
What carries over unchanged: the folder structure, empty folders, hidden files whose names start with a dot, and file and folder modification dates. Names in any language are written with ZIP's Unicode flag. The trade-off is size. ZIP's Deflate cannot match LZMA, so text-heavy archives grow noticeably, while archives full of photos or video barely change. Archives nested inside your 7z are copied into the ZIP as they are, not converted.
Failures are explicit. An encrypted archive stops with a password-protected message instead of hanging on a password prompt, and a damaged one stops with an error instead of producing a ZIP with files missing. Most archives finish within a few seconds of the upload.
How to Convert 7Z to ZIP
- Make sure you have one complete .7z file. Split sets (.7z.001, .7z.002 and so on) have to be joined into a single archive first.
- If the archive is password-protected, extract it yourself with the password; at that point your system can zip the folder directly, and no conversion is needed.
- Upload the .7z file, or up to 10 archives at once. Guests can upload archives of up to 50 MB; signing in raises the cap to 100 MB.

Can I convert .7z to .zip without changing the file dates?
Yes. The modification dates of files and folders are read from the 7z and written into the ZIP. ZIP's basic date field rounds to two seconds; the exact timestamp is also written to an extended time field in the ZIP.
Will the ZIP be bigger than my 7z?
Usually, yes. 7z's LZMA compression is stronger than ZIP's Deflate. Documents, code and other text can grow by a noticeable margin, while photos and video stay about the same size because Deflate cannot shrink them and they are stored as they are.
Why did my 7z conversion fail?
The usual cause is a damaged or incomplete archive, often an interrupted download. If even one file inside fails its checksum, the whole conversion stops rather than producing a ZIP with a broken file. Re-download the archive, test it with 7-Zip's Test command if you have it, and upload again.
Can you convert a password-protected 7z?
No. The conversion stops with a password-protected message, because an encrypted archive cannot be opened without its password and we do not ask for it. Extract the archive on your computer with the password, then zip the extracted folder with your system's built-in compression.
What happens to archives inside my 7z?
Inner ZIP, RAR or 7z files are copied into the new ZIP unchanged. One exception: if the 7z contains nothing but a single .tar file, the converter unpacks that .tar and the ZIP holds its contents instead.
Is 7z or ZIP the better format?
7z makes smaller archives and is the better choice when you control both ends. ZIP is the better choice when you do not know what the recipient has installed, because Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS all open it without extra software.
What happens to my files after conversion?
The archive is unpacked and re-packed on our server. The uploaded 7z and the temporary extracted files are deleted when the conversion finishes, and the ZIP itself is cleared from the server roughly four hours after that.
