What an AAC to MP3 conversion actually changes
A file that ends in .aac is almost always a raw ADTS stream: a bare sequence of AAC frames with no container wrapped around them, so there is no index, nowhere to store tags, and nothing a player can read a reliable duration from. Plenty of older car head units, USB receivers and MP3-only media libraries never learned to parse ADTS, even though the same AAC audio inside .m4a or .mp4 plays fine for them.
On this page the file is decoded by ffmpeg 5.1.9 and re-encoded with libmp3lame at a requested 192 kbps constant bitrate. Both AAC-LC and HE-AAC streams decode. There is one encoding pass, no filter chain, no normalization and no resampling request, and the conversion runs on our servers rather than in your browser. The output is a single MP3 named after your original file with the extension swapped.
What survives: sample rates up to 48 kHz, mono stays mono, and title, artist and album tags are rewritten as ID3 when the source carried them. Chapters survive too, which matters if you drop an .m4b audiobook here. What changes: rates above 48 kHz are lowered to 48 kHz, more than two channels are folded down to stereo, and every embedded picture stream is dropped, so cover art does not come through. Sources below about 32 kHz get less than 192 kbps, because LAME clamps what MPEG allows at those rates. Both formats are lossy, so this is a re-encode, not a copy: keep the AAC if it is your only master.
The people who need this are usually not chasing better sound. They have a recording, a podcast download or a stream capture sitting in ADTS form, and they need it to show up in a car stereo's track list, in editing software with an MP3-only import, or on a device that predates AAC. If instead you want smaller files at a similar quality, the Opus page is the better target; FLAC will store the decoded audio without adding further loss, but it cannot restore anything AAC already discarded, so it only makes a bigger file.

- Check the extension first. This page accepts .aac plus any other audio source that can output MP3, so .m4a, .m4b, .wav, .flac, .wma and .ogg files work too. The short spelling .aif and Android's .3ga are not recognized; rename .aif to .aiff before uploading.

Will converting AAC to MP3 lose quality?
Yes, a little. Both formats are lossy, so the audio is decoded and encoded again, adding a second generation of loss. At 192 kbps CBR from a normal music AAC the difference is hard to hear on most gear, but it is real. Keep the original .aac as your master.
Can I choose 320 kbps, or VBR?
No. There is no bitrate, sample rate or quality selector here - MP3 output is always a requested 192 kbps CBR. If you specifically need 320 kbps or a V0 VBR encode, use a desktop tool such as ffmpeg, Audacity or fre:ac, where you set the rate control yourself.
Why is the album art and some metadata missing?
Cover art is dropped on every target we produce, because all picture streams are stripped during conversion. Tags are separate: a raw ADTS .aac file has nowhere to store title, artist or album, so a plain .aac source usually has nothing to carry over. Tags from .m4a sources are written as ID3. Add art and missing fields afterward in a tag editor.
Can I convert Apple Music or purchased iTunes tracks?
No. Protected Apple files use the .m4p extension, which this converter does not accept, and any DRM-encrypted stream that reaches the server is refused with a message saying so. We do not remove copy protection. Apple's Music app can convert your own unprotected AAC files to MP3 locally.
What happens to a 5.1-channel AAC file?
MP3 output is folded down to stereo, so a surround AAC loses its discrete channels. If you need all six channels, convert to OGG, which keeps a 5.1 layout, or to FLAC, which handles up to 8 channels and adds no further loss on top of the AAC - though it cannot restore what AAC discarded, so the file just gets much bigger. AC3 also keeps 5.1, but at a fixed 192 kbps for the whole mix.
The conversion failed - what should I do?
Almost every file on this pair converts. If you see an "Invalid data found when processing input" or filter-graph error, the source is usually truncated or renamed - re-download or re-export it and try again. If the message mentions DRM or an unsupported codec, the stream itself cannot be decoded and you need an unprotected or undamaged copy.
How many AAC files can I convert at once?
Up to 10 files per batch for guests and free accounts, 25 on Plus and 50 on Pro. Per IP address there is also a cap of 10 conversion jobs per hour with 2 running at the same time on the free tiers, and 50 per hour with 5 at once on paid plans.
What happens to my files after conversion?
Conversion runs on our servers, not in your browser. Your uploaded AAC is deleted as soon as the job finishes, and the MP3 plus its download link are removed automatically after about four hours. Transfers use HTTPS and the link is an unguessable random token, but we do log file names, sizes and outcomes, and signed-in accounts keep a conversion history entry.
