Why Convert APE to MP3
APE is Monkey's Audio, a lossless compressor that squeezes a CD rip harder than FLAC but asks for far more processing power to play back. It was popular on audio forums and in CD-image rips, which is why so many APE files are album-length and arrive next to a .cue sheet. Hardly anything plays them natively: no iPhone, almost no car head unit, no browser, and on Android only players that ship their own decoder. MP3 goes the other way, with mediocre compression and support in literally everything.
Here the file is handed to ffmpeg, which includes a Monkey's Audio decoder. The APE stream is decoded to PCM and that PCM is encoded with LAME as a constant 192 kbps MP3. The bitrate is fixed on this page, so searches for a 320 kbps rip do not apply to us: there is no bitrate, VBR or sample-rate selector anywhere in the flow. If you specifically need 320 kbps, do the encode locally with foobar2000, dBpoweramp or ffmpeg on your own machine.
Tags survive the trip: title, artist and album are written into the MP3 as ID3 frames. Cover art does not, because every picture stream is stripped during conversion. The sample rate is kept up to 48 kHz, and anything higher is brought down to 48 kHz, so a 96 kHz APE produces a 48 kHz MP3. Mono stays mono, and anything with more than two channels is folded to stereo. MP3 is lossy and the step is one-way, so keep the APE if it is your archive copy; the MP3 is the listening copy.
The part that trips people up is album images. We convert each uploaded file into exactly one output file, and .cue is not an accepted upload format, so an album-length APE becomes a single long MP3 with no track breaks. To get separate numbered tracks, split the APE locally first with CUETools, foobar2000 or shntool using the CUE sheet, then bring the individual files here. That is the honest answer to "convert APE CUE to separate MP3": the split has to happen before the upload.
So this page suits a collection of single-track APE files, or album images you are happy to hear as one continuous file, when you want them playable on a phone, a car USB stick or a cheap MP3 player without installing anything.
How to Convert APE to MP3
- If your APE is a whole CD with a .cue sheet and you want one MP3 per track, split it first on your computer with CUETools or foobar2000. We convert one file to one file and cannot read the CUE.
- Check the size. Album-length APE rips are often well over the 50 MB guest limit; a free account raises it to 100 MB, Plus to 200 MB and Pro to 1 GB per file.
- Drop your .ape files onto the page. Up to ten files go in one request, and they do not all have to be APE.
- Start the conversion. Monkey's Audio decoding is processor-heavy, but a typical single track of around 20 MB is done in a few seconds; a full album image takes proportionally longer.
- Download the MP3s. Each keeps the original base name with the new extension, and the links work for about four hours.
- Copy them to the phone, player or USB stick, and keep the APE files if they are your only lossless copy.

Can I get 320 kbps MP3 from my APE files?
Not here. This page always requests 192 kbps constant bitrate and there is no quality selector. If 320 kbps matters to you, decode and encode locally with foobar2000, dBpoweramp or ffmpeg, where you control the encoder settings.
Can you split an APE plus CUE album into separate MP3 tracks?
No. We produce one output file per input file, and the .cue sheet is not an accepted upload. Split the image first with CUETools, foobar2000 or shntool, then convert the resulting per-track files on this page.
Can I upload the .cue file too?
The uploader will refuse it as an unsupported format. Only the audio file itself is accepted, so upload the .ape and keep the CUE for your local splitting tool.
Will I hear the difference compared with the APE?
On earbuds, a phone speaker or a car stereo, 192 kbps MP3 is usually hard to tell from the lossless source. On good headphones with dense music you may hear it. The step cannot be undone, so treat the APE as the master and the MP3 as the copy you carry around.
Do tags and album covers survive?
Title, artist and album come through as ID3 tags. Embedded cover art does not: every image stream is dropped during conversion, so you would need to re-attach artwork in a tag editor such as Mp3tag.
My album APE failed or timed out. What now?
The usual causes are the per-file size limit, a truncated download that makes ffmpeg report invalid data, or a file so long it passes the 30-minute processing cap. Re-download the APE, split it into tracks, or sign in for the larger size limits and the email notification option.
How many files can I convert at once?
Ten files per request without an account, with a cap of ten conversion jobs per hour from one address. Plus and Pro raise that to 25 and 50 files per request. There is no single-click zip download, so the MP3s are fetched one by one.
Where does the conversion happen and how long are files kept?
On our servers, not in your browser. The APE you uploaded is deleted when the job ends, and the MP3 stays available on an unguessable download link for about four hours before automatic deletion. File names, sizes and outcomes are logged for operations.
