Why Convert OFD to PDF?
OFD (Open Fixed-layout Document, Chinese national standard GB/T 33190) is China's counterpart to PDF. Chinese tax systems issue electronic fapiao in it, and government offices, banks and state-owned companies send official documents in it. Outside China almost nothing reads it: Acrobat, macOS Preview, Word and web browsers do not recognize .ofd, so an invoice from a Chinese supplier often lands in an accounts inbox as a file nobody can open.
An .ofd file is a ZIP package of XML page descriptions, fonts and images. Our server unpacks it and redraws every page into a PDF with ofdrw, an open-source Java library for the OFD standard. ofdrw has two PDF writers; the PDFBox writer is tried first, and when it cannot handle the OpenType fonts most e-invoices embed, the iText writer renders the file instead. If ofdrw cannot read the package at all, a simpler backup renderer makes an attempt, and if that backup's pages come out blank you get an error message instead of an empty PDF.
Text stays as real characters, drawn with the fonts embedded in the OFD at the exact coordinates the file records, together with lines, table borders, images and seal graphics. Each PDF page takes the size of the OFD page, so a landscape invoice stays landscape instead of being fitted to A4. Two things can differ. If the OFD only names a font such as SimSun or KaiTi without embedding it, our server substitutes a font it has, and the substitute can look plainer than the original. And because OFD positions each character on its own, text copied out of the PDF may contain extra spaces or line breaks.
The red seal on a fapiao is the visible part of an electronic signature. We draw the seal image onto the page where it appears in the OFD, but the cryptographic signature behind it is not turned into a PDF signature and is not checked by us. The PDF shows the seal; it cannot prove the seal is genuine. For audits and reimbursement, keep the original .ofd and verify the invoice through China's official tax verification service.
Typical users are accounts-payable teams and importers receiving fapiao from Chinese suppliers, travelers claiming expenses for purchases made in China, and anyone sent a notice or contract as .ofd. Most files are small invoices that finish about a second after upload.
How to Convert OFD to PDF
- Save the .ofd file itself to your computer. If the supplier sent a .zip holding several invoices, extract it first and use the .ofd files inside.

What is an OFD file?
OFD is China's fixed-layout document standard, GB/T 33190, used for electronic fapiao, tax records and government paperwork. Like PDF it fixes every element on the page, but it stores pages as XML inside a ZIP package, so renaming .ofd to .pdf does not work; the pages have to be redrawn.
Can I convert OFD to PDF online without installing an OFD reader?
Yes. You do not need an OFD viewer from the Microsoft Store or software from a Chinese tax portal. Upload the .ofd here and download a PDF; it is free without an account for files up to 50 MB, and creating an account raises that to 100 MB.
Is the seal or digital signature still valid in the PDF?
The seal image is reproduced in position, but the digital signature is not. The PDF carries no signature field, so it cannot show the invoice is authentic or unaltered. Treat it as a readable copy and keep the .ofd as the record of proof.
Why do some characters look different, or paste with odd spacing?
When an OFD names a font without embedding it, our server uses a substitute, which can look plainer. Copied text can pick up spaces between characters because OFD places each character separately; the printed layout is unaffected.
My OFD failed as "corrupt or uploaded incompletely". What can I do?
This is the most common failure, and it almost always means the file is truncated or empty, typically an interrupted download from email, a messaging app or a tax portal. Download the original again, check that it is more than a few kilobytes, and upload that copy.
What does "OFD.xml not found" or "could not be rendered completely" mean?
"OFD.xml not found" means the upload is a ZIP file but not an OFD package, for example an archive of several invoices given an .ofd name; extract it and upload the real .ofd files. "Could not be rendered completely" means our main renderer could not read the file and the backup produced blank pages, so we stopped instead of sending an empty PDF. Try again later, and if it keeps failing, contact us about the file.
Why did a file with a very long Chinese name fail?
Government documents often use the full official title as the file name, and names that long exceed what our server can store for the converted file. Rename it to something shorter, such as the document number, and convert again.
What happens to my OFD files after conversion?
Files are converted on our servers. The uploaded OFD is deleted as soon as its conversion finishes, and the PDF is removed automatically about four hours later, so download it promptly.
